The Intersectional Wage Gaps Faced By Latina Women In The United States

Others are out of the workforce due to individual or family challenges that keep them from working, such as health or mental health issues, or are working in informal jobs or are undocumented and thus do not qualify for unemployment insurance if laid off. In February 2020, about 5 million people were actively seeking work but not employed.

These specialists provide diagnoses and counseling for birth defects and inherited conditions. For example, women whose babies have a congenital heart defect such as a ventricular septal defect or hypoplastic left or right heart syndrome can consult with a cardiothoracic surgeon. Pediatric surgeons can repair complex congenital or acquired conditions soon after birth. Our staff is dedicated to educating and monitoring women with diabetes who are at risk of having babies with an increased risk of heart defects. A dietitian and a diabetes nurse practitioner help women manage their blood sugar during pregnancy.

Some argue it’s a pipeline issue – that if we can interest more young girls in STEM subjects, the issue will resolve itself over time. After all, the percentage of women in computer science has actually decreased since 1991. A concept known as the “social identity theory” explains how people derive their identity from the groups they are welcomed to based on commonalities. There are in-groups and out-groups, and people find worth in being in those in-groups. For the most part, researchers have concentrated on Caucasian girls and women from middle- to upper-class backgrounds, with few doctors even equipped with the language and questions to ask Latina sufferers. But even though researchers and physicians seem to overwhelmingly disregard Latinas in their work, eating disorders do not discriminate.

Offering and facilitating access to occupations that are higher paid will also move Latinas up the occupational ladder. Here too, however, we find that even within the same occupations, Latinas fare worse. This violence can manifest in different ways, and is often difficult to diagnose when it the result of verbal threats rather than physical abuse.
